Interns in Hickory, North Carolina, joined full-time employees to serve nearly 450 people at the Hickory Soup Kitchen.
"I feel that this type of direct volunteering shows the community that Corning really does care and values its surroundings," said Shivakumar, a 2015 summer intern and master’s student at Texas Tech University. "Instead of seeing a 'Sponsored by' or 'Donated by' sign, the people of the community get to know Corning much more personally."

Claire's Story
Claire's Story
After interning for three consecutive summers, Claire knew where she wanted to begin her career.
"I wouldn't intern at a company I couldn't see myself working for," said Claire, who interned at Corning in 1997, 1998, and 1999. She returned to Corning in a full-time position upon her graduation from Rutgers University. "By the time I became full time, I knew everyone I was working with. The transition was pretty seamless."

Interns Discover Their Strengths
Interns Discover Their Strengths
Corning's 2015 summer intern class participated in StrengthsFinder workshops. Based on Tom Rath's bestseller, "StrengthsFinder 2.0," each intern took an online assessment and received a personalized top-five strength ranking.
"I love being able to share this methodology with everyone, especially those who are up and coming," said Judy, the Corning employee who led the session. "I believe there is everything to gain and a lot that companies can lose by not encouraging people to use their strengths every day."

An employee group hosted a panel luncheon for the 2015 intern class, giving them a chance to ask questions while also receiving valuable career advice.
"I think that events like this are important for both Corning and the interns," said Jackie, a curent Corning employee and former intern. "People wanting to work here need to know that, not only are they going to be happy in their professional lives, but that the people who work here are actual people with real lives of their own outside of work."

Interns Earn Their Yellow Belts
Interns Earn Their Yellow Belts
The 2015 summer intern class attended Six Sigma training sessions to obtain Yellow Belt certification, learning how to improve processes for their projects.
The training introduced the Six Sigma basics and how to use process variation with a Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) process. Corning uses this data-driven approach to improve processes. After completion of the lesson, the interns took the Yellow Belt test, where "belt" signifies a level of proficiency in a particular skill.
The interns worked in a high-energy and creative environment to explore different ways to improve processes in different experiments.

Jade's Story
"Every day provides a new and exciting challenge with highly intelligent colleagues. During the summer I have learned how to effectively collaborate, work in a corporate setting, and explore the endless possibilities within Corning," said Jade, a University of Maine student graduating in 2016.
"Working within Corning Display Technologies (CDT) has been an adventure on its own," she said. "There are projects being finished, worked on, and started all the time. It shows how dedicated the people here are to designing the next big thing or just improving a system."
