Connected devices are all around us – in homes, office buildings, hotels, hospitals, factories, airports and more – and new digital applications are emerging all the time. Increasingly these applications require the higher speed made possible by 5G.

What is 5G?
What is 5G?
Simply put, 5G is the fifth generation of cellular networks, building on technology that’s been around since the first cellular network was launched in 1983. The first three generations of cellular networks – the first three Gs – mainly supported voice and text transmissions. The fourth generation (4G) was designed to accommodate rising data transmission rates. The fifth generation, or 5G, is designed to support all those connected devices and applications – not just mobile phones but also sensors, advanced robotics, connected homes and factories – that are transforming the way we live, work and play.
This new generation of telecommunications networks relies on optical fiber, the hair-thin strand of glass invented by Corning scientists over 50 years ago. Today Corning, with its unique combination of capabilities in manufacturing, leadership, and innovation, works with customers all over the world to help them capture the promise and potential of 5G.
