Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) and OLEDWorks LLC, along with facilitator NineSigma, today announced the winners of the Lighting without a Bulb contest.
Each of the three winners was each awarded $10,000 for their innovative OLED lighting luminaires.
They include:
- Matthew Boyko, Society Creative, USA
- Michael Garner, MSG Lighting, USA
- Sadyr Khabukhayev, Izmir Institute of Technology, Kazakhstan
“We were impressed with the 48 innovative drawings that were submitted and as expected, they pushed the boundaries of OLED lighting applications,” said Dr. Dipak Q. Chowdhury, division vice president and program director, Emerging Innovations Group, Corning. “The three winning designs were selected for their uniqueness, aesthetics, and functionality. They also highlight the benefits of OLED lighting panels and demonstrate that the next generation of lighting is here.”
“The lighting concepts submitted to the competition showcase OLED’s versatility across an expansive range of applications,” said David DeJoy, president and co-founder, OLEDWorks. “The combination of thinness and superb light quality inspired designers to create beautiful product concepts not only for general lighting but also for furniture, task, and portable lighting.”
Contestants were challenged to create unique luminaire designs that are functional, practical, and can be manufactured. Designs also had to integrate OLEDWorks’ lighting panels which are thin, lightweight, and cool to the touch. Unlike traditional lighting that requires light bulbs, OLEDs are thin panels that can be integrated into luminaires, architectural building materials, and furniture to create low-glare, seamless experiences for retail, hospitality, residential and medical lighting applications. When turned off, OLEDs can be made to look like mirrors that can be used in walls or vanity mirrors.
Corning and OLEDWorks co-hosted the contest, which ran from April 8 to June 30, to broaden awareness and create excitement for this next-generation technology. Corning and OLEDWorks announced a collaboration agreement in April 2015 to create unique and conformable next-generation OLED lighting solutions using Corning® Willow® Glass. OLED lighting offers the unique design of luminaires, which can be conformed to a curved surface.
