Tough Redefined

As a leader in tough cover glass for mobile devices, we push boundaries.

As mobile devices become more ubiquitous, so too are the chances of dropping them on rougher surfaces like concrete and asphalt. And since phones are getting bigger and heavier, our scientists knew it was time to get tougher on testing.

Testing Tough

To imitate real-word drops, we have established a testing vehicle using a drop tower onto hard, rough surfaces using 80 and 180 grit sandpaper which simulates sharp-contact damage (similar to concrete and asphalt). To test our glass performance, we use Corning-designed pucks that represent modern smartphones that are heavier with a larger surface area and thinner design.

Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus® 2 survived drops up to 1 meter on surfaces replicating concrete during lab tests. Competitive aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers typically failed when dropped from 0.5 meter or less.

Defining Surfaces

Both concrete and asphalt are made of rock, sand, and aggregate creating a surface of rough and jagged edges. What makes them different is the adhesive that holds them together.

Asphalt uses a heated tar-based adhesive and weighted rolling machinery to compact the material. This results in a flatter, compressed surface.

Concrete uses cement as an adhesive while a floating device is simply pulled across the top of the surface to evenly distribute materials. This allows jagged rock and sand to be exposed.
