Samsung Galaxy Watch first device to feature new glass composite, delivering superior scratch resistance and anti-reflective optics
CORNING, N.Y., August 9, 2018 — Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced today that Corning® Gorilla® Glass DX+ has been chosen as the cover material for Samsung’s Galaxy Watch. Gorilla Glass DX+ is a new glass composite which features superior scratch resistance and an anti-reflective property that vastly improves optical clarity while retaining the inherent toughness of Gorilla Glass.
Consumer research* reveals that the three most important customer concerns for mobile devices are drop, scratch, and readability. Corning created its latest glass composite innovation, Gorilla Glass DX+, to help address these issues for today’s advanced mobile displays.
“We are pleased that Samsung has designed Gorilla Glass DX+ into their latest device,” said Scott Forester, division vice president, Marketing and Innovation Products, Corning Gorilla Glass. “Gorilla Glass DX+ offers the unique combination of superior scratch resistance and excellent optics, making it an ideal cover material solution for today’s digital life.”
Samsung chose Gorilla Glass DX+ for its latest smart watch due to its best-in-class scratch resistance, optical clarity, and durability. The Galaxy Watch brings the best of Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem, with long-lasting battery life, LTE connectivity, and new stress- and sleep- monitoring capabilities, in addition to offering a more robust line of style options.
Introduced in July, Gorilla Glass DX+ enhances display readability by lowering the front surface reflection by 75 percent versus standard glass, and increasing the display contrast ratio by 50 percent with the same display brightness level. These improvements in optical clarity can also improve battery life. In addition, Gorilla Glass DX+ provides outstanding scratch resistance approaching that of alternative luxury cover materials.
While currently being adopted primarily for wearable mobile devices, developments are underway to adapt these new glass composites to larger form-factor devices.
Corning continues to lead the cover glass industry it created more than 10 years ago. Today, Corning Gorilla Glass has been designed into more than 6 billion devices across 45 major brands. The introduction of this new glass composite, Gorilla Glass DX+, is yet another example of Corning’s continued commitment to innovation – using its core understanding of materials science and process-development expertise to deliver important solutions and extend the company’s market leadership in mobile consumer electronics.
