Established in January 2009 as Corning’s Science & Technology west coast hub.

A state-of-the-art applied research laboratory, strategically located in Silicon Valley’s environment of high-tech companies, superb universities, and an unparalleled venture capitalist community.

Corning West Technology Center (CWTC) is a state-of-the-art applied research laboratory that supports Corning’s global research function with the responsibility to connect with the high-tech community on the west coast of the United States and establish links with appropriate industries, academia, national labs, and venture capitalists.

Dynamic Groups and Teams

Research Collaborations

The Research Collaborations organization focuses on strategic partnerships with compelling early-stage technology companies in industries including automotive, display, mobile consumer electronics, life sciences, and optical communications. The organization actively looks for opportunities to partner, collaborate, and invest.

Applied Materials Science

The Applied Materials Science team focuses on the exploration of new applications and the understanding of emerging requirements and opportunities for Corning’s material solutions.

The team works on the identification, exploration, and prototyping of new applications for engineered glass, ceramics, and polymers, including the understanding of material properties and their role in electronic devices, bioscience, energy materials, and clean technology. The team’s current project portfolio includes materials for high-performance electronics and smart vessels for cell culture.

The Applied Materials Science team focuses on the exploration of new applications and the understanding of emerging requirements and opportunities for Corning’s material solutions.

Applied Physics

The Applied Physics team has a range of technical backgrounds spanning optics, electronics, and mechanical engineering. The team seeks to identify customer or emerging market needs that match Corning’s technology capabilities and develop innovative solutions. With a deep understanding of complex systems, the team uses scientific modeling and laboratory measurements to relate system performance to material and component properties. The team’s research interests include metasurfaces and their applications, bioprocess monitors, automotive optical sensor systems, the optics of windows and sensor protection elements, and optical communications for automotive applications.

Emerging Innovations

CWTC helps drive Research & Development programs in the new product innovation portfolio, including the Emerging Innovations Group, which features new market opportunities to create emerging innovations that lead to new products and businesses.

Dr. Donnell Walton, Director, Corning West Technology Center

Donnell leads CWTC site operations, develops and aligns the technology strategy to drive R&D programs in the new product innovation portfolio, and coordinates the delivery of CWTC’s technical programs with Science & Technology, the Emerging Innovations Group, and the core businesses.

Dr. Jeffrey King, Senior Research Manager, Applied Materials Science

Dr. Jeffrey King, Senior Research Manager, Applied Materials Science

Jeff joined Corning in 2008 after a three-year postdoctoral fellow position at Stanford University. He holds a doctorate in materials science from Georgia Tech and a bachelor’s degree in materials engineering from Auburn University. Jeff is a recognized technical expert in materials science, optics, and experimental methods.
